Typography
Adding personality to the plain old text

Typography is what text uses to “talk” to the reader through its many aspects like Typeface, Size, Line length, Spacing—Leading, Kerning, and Tracking.

Learning designers effectively use simple text to establish hierarchy and usher the learner through the course organization. Typography also communicates with the learner’s psyche to evoke certain moods or feelings, and the size decides the extent of the emotional impact. It is thus effectively used to set the “tone” of the course. For example, while some fonts create a feel of tradition, respect, and comfort, others convey stability, objectivity, and modernity, and yet others exude elegance and artistic appeal.

Typography, combined with other visual design elements, decides the learner’s level of interest, engagement, and consumption of the written material, ultimately affecting their response and the learning outcome.
